Kenneth Powell, D.O.
Dr. Powell is a board certified physical medicine & rehabilitation specialist. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology at Alabama State University in 1996 and his doctorate from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004. He graduated from the Temple University/MossRehab PM&R residency program where he was nominated chief resident and he is a graduate of the Interventional Pain Medicine fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital.

Patrick Burns, D.O.
Dr. Burns is board certified in both anesthesiology and pain management by the American Board of Anesthesiology. His undergraduate degree in biochemistry is from Florida State University and he received his D.O. from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. His post graduate education includes an internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He studied preventative medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia. He then completed a fellowship in interventional pain management at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Burns’ training encompasses all aspects of current interventional techniques. He is also one of the leading experts on radiofrequency and the treatment of pain syndromes here in the Southeast. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association and Duval County Medical Society. He is also owner of Southeast Anesthesia and Spine Specialists. Prior to joining Coastal, he spent five years with the Jacksonville Spine Center.
Chris Manees, M.D.
Dr. Christopher Manees is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology with a Subspecialty Certification in Pain Medicine. He earned his medical doctorate from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2006 and completed his Anesthesiology Residency in 2010. Manees finished his pain medicine fellowship at the same institution in 2011, where he managed acute/chronic pain consults.
Before joining Coastal Injury Clinic, Manees worked for three years at a private practice in Austin, Texas. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Academy of Pain Medicine, and American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Manees received the Patients’ Choice Award and Compassionate Doctor recognition in 2010 and 2011 during his pain medicine fellowship at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center and again in 2012 and 2013 while in private practice.
Steven Rizzolo, M.D.
Steven Rizzolo, M.D. is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Rizzolo completed his surgical internship at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His orthopedic surgery residency was performed at Thomas Jefferson University-affiliated hospitals and his spine fellowship was conducted at Thomas Jefferson University and Pennsylvania Hospital, all in Philadelphia. He is a founding member of the Paul Nemir Jr. Surgical Foundation and a member of Jefferson Orthopedic Society, Montana Medical Association, American Spinal Injury Association, Cervical Spine Research Society, North American Spine Society, and the Western Orthopedic Association.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Rizzolo has contributed and presented on a multitude of scientific videos, exhibits, videos, and publications, educating on spinal issues, techniques, and surgical developments. Prior to joining Coastal Injury Clinic, Dr. Rizzolo was at an orthopedic center in Arizona but has spent the majority of his practicing career in Montana. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery under the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Timothy Syperek, D.P.M.
Dr. Timothy Syperek is a board-certified podiatrist with Coastal Injury Clinic, where he provides comprehensive care for all aspects of the lower leg and foot. Syperek combines preventative options with surgical solutions and is one of the leading experts in diabetic wound care. Currently, Dr. Syperek is Chief of Podiatry at St. Vincent’s Healthcare and head of Coastal Podiatry in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Syperek received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree and completed a residency at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Independence, Ohio. He has training in podiatric orthopaedics and sports medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital and in pediatric and adult podiatric surgery through his residency in Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. Taking his studies overseas, Dr. Syperek completed a trauma fellowship in Russian Siberia’s Kurgan region.
While serving as an officer in the U.S. Army, and later in the civilian sector, Dr. Syperek helped to establish numerous multi-disciplinary diabetic limb salvage clinics. His international mission work includes helping to create a diabetic limb salvage clinic in Port Au Prince, Haiti, working with and teaching Haitian physicians and surgeons. He is involved in several multi-site clinical studies focusing on diabetic wound care and surgical intervention.

Maged Hamza, M.D.
Interventional pain management specialist Maged Hamza, M.D., brings decades of experience, innovation and dedication to Coastal Injury Clinic, practicing in the treatment of all types of chronic neck and spine pain. Board certified in anesthesiology and pain management, he is a recognized pioneer in the use of spinal cord stimulation and pain pump technology, uniquely matching the right treatment to each patient. Treatments may include nerve blocks, radio frequency ablation, injections and other minimally invasive procedures. Dr. Hamza is recognized internationally as a lecturer, author and medical device innovator.
Dr. Hamza began his medical training in anatomy and physiology from Cairo University in Egypt, where he was recognized as the Outstanding Honor Student for two years in a row. He completed an internship at University Hospital’s College of Medicine, at Cairo University, followed by residencies in anesthesiology and general surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. His fellowship was in pain management at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville.
As a physician, Dr. Hamza has worked in several U.S. hospitals and pain management centers, most recently in Iowa. Prior, he was in private practice and was also the director of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond’s interventional pain medicine fellowship, Spine Center, where he was involved with interventional pain and neuromodulation programs for more than a decade.
Dr. Hamza is a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology with a subspecialty in Pain Medicine and a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Examiners. He is a member of 15 medical associations including the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the International Spine Intervention Society. His patient-centric approach earned Dr. Hamza Richmond’s Top Doctor in Interventional Spine and Pain Management title for five continuous years.
In addition to his career as a physician, Dr. Hamza has worked as an instructor and a researcher. He taught at the University of Virginia, the International University of Health Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University and Eastern Virginia Medical School in roles as an associate professor. He has acted as a mentor to premed students, researchers and residents including Coastal physicians Kenneth Powell, D.O. and Scott Schimpff, M.D.
Dr. Hamza conducted research involving innovative methods of diagnosing and treating pain at Eastern Virginia Medical School, National Spine and Pain Centers, a US Naval Medical Research Unit and the University of Arizona. His research delved into chronic pain, neuro- modulation of chronic pain, pain pumps and non-invasive treatments. During the course of his research, he published sixteen research papers and was later selected as an editorial board reviewer for eight different professional journals.
Dr. Hamza is a sought-after presenter, speaking at seminars internationally on topics from fire in the operating room to workshops on pain pump placement, to usage of drugs in treating pain. His work can be found as an author of several medical textbook chapters.
Richard Gamiz, PA-C
Richard Gamiz is a board-certified physician assistant who earned his degree from Miami-Dade College. Prior to graduation, Richard was a paramedic in Miami. Since becoming a P.A. in 2000, Richard has practiced orthopedic and spine surgery in both Miami and Jacksonville, assisting in surgery alongside some of our areas most renowned surgeons.
Kaylan McClary, M.D.
Kaylan McClary, M.D. is an orthopedic surgeon with Coastal Injury Clinic. She earned her medical degree and bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Dr. McClary completed a five-year accredited orthopedic surgery residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. She then finished her training with a fellowship in sports medicine in Texas with Houston Methodist Hospital, where she worked firsthand with medical providers caring for elite teams and organizations such as: Houston Astros, Houston Texans, NASA, Houston Ballet and Rice University.
In addition to caring for elite teams and organizations, Dr. McClary has participated in event medical care for a variety of athletics such as boxing, hockey, rugby, volleyball, rodeo and marathon running.
Dr. McClary’s advanced training includes comprehensive upper extremity procedures including but not limited to: shoulder fracture care, arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder replacement, biceps tendon repair and Tommy John surgery (a.k.a. ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction).
She is also experienced in open and arthroscopic knee procedures, such as: ligament reconstructions (i.e. ACL), patellar tendon repair, meniscus and cartilage procedure and osteotomies.
Dr. McClary has also been active in orthopedic development and research. She has authored scientific papers and presentations in areas including cartilage defect repair, meniscus repair and ACL reconstruction.
Dr. McClary completed part 1 of the ABOS board certification process, with plans to pursue future board certifications in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.
Christopher Netzel, M.D.
Christopher Netzel, M.D. is board certified in pain medicine and anesthesiology. He earned his doctorate degree with University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison in 2014. Before joining Coastal Spine and Pain Center, Dr. Netzel was an interventional pain management physician at SSM Health in Madison, Wisconsin. He wrote the guidelines for dorsal root ganglion stimulation as well as conducted research on preoperative opioid use and outcome after spinal surgery. His medical residency in anesthesiology was completed at University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison. Later, Dr. Netzel completed a fellowship in Pain Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
He is accomplished in the following procedures: injection therapies, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, intrathecal pump placement and management, kyphoplasty, and minimally invasive lumbar decompression. Dr. Netzel has also researched how gut microbes and metabolic syndrome may affect anesthesia. His professional presentations include stimulator therapies for vertebral compression fractures and diabetic neuropathy. Dr. Netzel is a member of a number of medical associations, including the North American Neuromodulation Society, American Society of Regional Anesthesiologists, American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Wisconsin Medical Society.
Scott Schimpff, M.D.
Dr. Schimpff is board certified in pain medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He received his doctorate degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2002. He completed his medical internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN and his medical residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He then completed a fellowship in Pain Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2007. Before joining Coastal Spine and Pain Center, Dr. Schimpff worked as the medical director of pain medicine and the director of the spine clinic for Sheltering Arms Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was a clinical professor and the site director of the pain medicine fellowship training program at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. Dr. Schimpff has research experience working as a molecular biologist at the National Institutes of Health. He is a member of a number of medical associations, including American Academy of Pain Medicine.
Michael Greene, D.O.
Dr. Michael Greene is a double board certified physician in both interventional pain medicine as well as physical medicine and rehabilitation. He completed a prestigious interventional pain fellowship under the instruction of Dr. Frank Falco in the Department of Pain Management at Temple University. This extensive program emphasized medical, procedural and surgical/implantable treatments of pain ailments and syndromes. Prior to that, he completed his residency training at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Greene received his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine after graduating from Emory University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Prior to joining Coastal Spine and Pain Center, he was an attending physician in the Philadelphia area specializing in interventional treatment of pain where he partnered with an orthopedic spine surgeon. Dr. Greene is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the International Spine Intervention Society. He was awarded South Jersey’s “Top Doc” and Top Physician for Women in both 2013 and 2014.
Gary Kao, M.D.
Dr. Gary Kao is a Doctor of Medicine who is double board certified with the American Board of Anesthesia in both anesthesia and pain management. He graduated from and completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He later completed a residency in anesthesiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Following his core residency, Dr. Kao pursued subspecialty training with a fellowship at Mount Sinai West/Morningside in New York City where he gained extensive experience and specialized training in pain management and procedural interventions. He also holds an undergraduate degree with honors in neuroscience from John Hopkins University.
Prior to joining Coastal Spine and Pain Center, Dr. Kao served as an interventional pain physician in Corpus Christi, Texas where he developed an interventional pain practice offering comprehensive care and CDC-compliant medication management when appropriate. Dr. Kao’s excellent service and tireless work built this clinic from a part-time satellite to a full-time operation expanding services to include more advanced procedures with a drive to be at the forefront of innovation and emerging technologies.
Dr. Kao is an active member in his specialty societies such as the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the North American Neuromodulation Society. He has been a contributor to peer-reviewed journals on pain management and has served as an instructor for other clinicians on specialty nerve blocks.
